County-by-county: Government offices, school districts, other agencies announce closures ahead of Hurricane Debby (2024)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia school districts, government offices, and other agencies have announced closures for Monday due to Tropical Storm Debby.

As of the 11 a.m. National Hurricane Center update, the storm’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 70 mph and it will continue to weaken as it moves inland.

Here’s a list of closures in our area. Please note that this list will be updated as more closures are announced.

NORTHEAST FLORIDA

Duval County

Duval County Public Schools: District schools and offices will be closed on Monday, Aug. 5. All on-campus events are also canceled. Schools will contact families directly to provide rescheduling information for impacted events. In addition, employees will work remotely.

City of Jacksonville: All COJ offices and facilities will be closed Monday. Only essential city personnel are expected to report to work Monday. All other city employees and partners will receive communication from the city later Saturday.

  • TRASH PICKUP NOTICE: Public Works officials said they are looking at keeping trash collection as scheduled on Monday, and they will be monitoring the storm to assess if Tuesday’s trash collection needs to be moved. If Public Works decides to cancel trash pickup on Tuesday, then it would get moved to Wednesday, and the trash pickup schedule would shift one day.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office: All publicly accessible JSO buildings will be closed on Monday. This includes:

Florida Department of Health in Duval County: DOH-Duval will be closed on Monday.

Duval County Courthouse: Chief Judge Lance Day has ordered that the Duval County Courthouse be closed on Monday. As a result, the Duval County Clerk of Courts announced that its offices will be also be closed. This includes both the Duval County Courthouse and the Clerk’s beaches branch at 1543 Atlantic Boulevard. Anyone who received a summons for jury service on Monday is excused and does not need to report to the Courthouse. Supervisor of Elections: The office will be closed Monday. The start of early voting for the primary election has been postponed until Wednesday. (duvalelections.gov)

The Bolles School: All Bolles campuses will be closed on Monday. Athletics, camps and events will also be canceled on Monday.

Jaguars: The Jaguars announced they will close practice to the public on Monday.

JEA: It will close its Customer Solutions Center located at 225 N. Pearl St. Customers can continue to conduct normal operations through jea.com.

Parks: Huguenot Memorial Park and Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park will be closed Monday.

Florida State College at Jacksonville: FSCJ canceled all classes and activities on all of its campuses on Monday, including online classes. Additionally, all administrative offices will also be closed. Officials said they plan to resume classes and reopen on Tuesday at regularly scheduled times.

Jacksonville International Airport: As of the latest update, JAX officials said the airport remains open and operational. However, they encouraged travelers to check with their airlines for updated flight information.

Clay County

Government offices: All county government offices will be closed on Monday. Closures on Tuesday will be storm-dependent.

  • TRASH PICKUP NOTICE: Garbage and recycling pickups, as well as the new garbage can deliveries, will be suspended on Monday and will resume on Tuesday, storm-dependent. For unincorporated Clay County and Town of Orange Park customers, Waste Management will also suspend trash, recycling and yard waste collection Monday. Clay County District Schools: All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, Aug. 5. In addition, all extracurricular activities will be canceled on Monday as well.

Florida Department of Health in Clay County: DOH-Clay will be closed on Monday. Closures on Tuesday will be storm-dependent. In addition, DOH-Clay’s Back to School Wellness events scheduled from Aug. 5 to the 14, will also be closed on Monday.

Nassau County

Nassau County School District: All schools and offices will open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. There will be no extracurricular activities (practices, tryouts, etc) on Tuesday. NCSD employees are urged to notify their immediate supervisor if they can’t make it to work safely. Parents are asked to seek school-specific information from their child’s school’s office, Facebook page, and website.

Columbia County

Columbia County Schools: All schools will be closed on Monday, and plan to resume operations on Tuesday.

Hotline available: Call the Citizen Information Center to report damage, downed trees, and flooding. The CIC is a central location for non-emergency calls and has information on storms and damage. Call the CIC at 386-719-7530 with your non-emergency needs.

Putnam County

Government offices: Putnam County government offices will be open on Monday. This includes:

  • Normal operations

  • Garbage collection

  • Early voting

Alachua County

The following offices will be closed Monday:

City of Gainesville

Alachua County libraries

Alachua County schools and district offices

The Alachua County Property Appraiser’s Office

City of Waldo

Town of Archer

The City of High Springs

The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County

  • TRASH PICKUP NOTICE: All Alachua County Solid Waste & Resource Recovery facilities and operations will not operate on Monday. This includes the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station, the Rural Collection Centers, the Hazardous Waste Collection Center, and the administrative offices. Residential waste collection services including garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulky items will not be conducted on Monday. These services will resume on Tuesday, August with all collections being delayed by one day through the rest of the week. Regular collection schedules will resume the following week.

University of Florida: The UF campus in Gainesville will be closed and classes are canceled for Monday, Aug. 5, including all academic and student-related activities, online classes and exams. The university expects to make an announcement on Monday on its plans to resume classes and normal campus operations.

St. Johns County

St. Johns River State College: All SJR State campuses will close Monday including in-person classes, college, and Thrasher-Horne Center events. Current students should check Canvas and SJR State email for information from instructors. At this time, the college will be open Tuesday.

SOUTHEAST GEORGIA

Camden County

Camden County Schools: Camden County Schools will delay the opening of the 2024-2025 school year. Officials said Camden County Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday for all staff and students. Schools will have a planning day for teachers on Wednesday. Students will return to school on Thursday, weather permitting.

  • TRASH PICKUP NOTICE: Trash services in St. Marys have been suspended for Monday. Officials will provide updates as they are available.

Glynn County

Glynn County Schools: All schools and district offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Staff will work from home to prepare for school, officials said. On Wednesday, staff will return to school and Open House will be held at the following times:

  • Elementary School: 4 to 6 p.m.

  • Middle School/GICCA: 5 to 7 p.m.

  • High School/GLC: 6 to 8 p.m.

Glynn County Schools officials said they plan on starting the first day of the 2024-2025 school year on Thursday.

Glynn County offices: Including courts, will close Monday. First responders and mission-critical staff will be on duty to support community needs.

City of Brunswick: Offices will close Monday but first responders and mission-critical staff will be on duty to support community needs.

Brunswick/Glynn Joint Water Sewer Commission will close Monday and Tuesday.

Coastal Health District closes on Monday at noon.

Brunswick-Glynn County Library will be closed Monday and Tuesday (Brunswick and SSI branches)

College of Coastal Georgia: Brunswick and Camden both closed on Monday.

Republic Services: Tuesday, August 6- no pickup or drop off services; Wednesday, August 7- drop off centers will be open in Brunswick and St. Simons 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with no charge. Regular pick-ups will also resume.

Brunswick drop-off location: 550 Young Lane, Brunswick, GA 31520; St. Simons drop-off location: 100 Recycle Way.

The F.J. Torras Causeway will remain open unless there are water hazards and flooding. Sidney Lanier Bridge will remain open unless wind speeds reach 40 mph sustained. Any decision to close the Bridge will be made by Georgia Department of Transportation.
